The festival gates will fling open at 6 PM and with them the exhibition of over 40 Czech and Slovak illustrators, together with a foreign guests’ section. Quench your thirst at the bar or in the café – the Hlína Café will give you the royal treatment. The illustrators will be nearby their rooms so you can meet them.
Starting at 7 PM, the great DJ mimomrtn will hit the deck and Veronika Ruppert will make you shake a leg at 9 PM.
Side note: this isn’t a vernissage – the same entrance fee applies to the first night and to the rest of the festival.

12:00 - 14:00 WORKSHOP – Ilona Polanski / Digital illustration from a sketch to the final work
The digital illustration workshop is designed for those with basic Photoshop skills. You can achieve different outcomes with a single tool. You’ll learn to reach the desired effect in digital drawing with the help of textures, various brushes, and colorization. Try out different ways, starting with a sketch and ending in a finished picture.

Meet our foreign guests! In the course of LUSTR talks, you’ll be introduced to the works of the Israeli Ori Toor, Spanish Miguel Ángel Camprubí López, and the DADA.nyc founders. Each of them will present important moments of their careers and share the ups and downs that can inspire an illustrator/artist to make their own way. The talks are followed by a discussion that will, as all attendees hope, naturally progress into a bar phase. The presentations will be held in English, your subsequent questions will be gladly interpreted.

9:30 - 11:30 KIDS’ WORKSHOP – TRANSFORMERS / Adéla Marie Jirků
Adéla will bring her passion for recycling, upcycling, and DIY hacks into a workshop where a bunch of boxes, an insulating tape, tinfoil, and others will turn into multifunctional alter egos of your heroes – the workshop participants. You will record their metamorphoses and finish the workshop by projecting these on the wall with the help of a DIY projector made of boxes.

13:00 - 15:00 LECTURE – Tomorrow, I’ll Be an Illustrator / Vladimír Strejček
Vladimír Strejček doesn’t need a lengthy introduction – the DRAWetc. studio, which he founded, belongs among the subjects that have been setting the Czech professional illustration standard for years. That’s one of the reasons we highly value his view on which qualities, skills, and experience should all professional illustrators possess. Besides having absolutely unique experiences at his disposal, Vladimír Strejček is a great motivator. Join us to find out what exactly should you do if you want to become an illustrator, maybe even tomorrow.

This course will take you through the process of text illustration or poster production. Creativity can be strengthened the same way muscles do. Come get some exercise. Nikola is a graduate of Prague’s UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design) and her illustrations can be seen in many publications, newspapers and magazines, and her posters for the Meet Factory were nominated for the CzechGrandDesign award, in the Illustration of the Year category.

18:00 - 21:00 WORKSHOP – Animate Yourself! / Miguel Ángel Camprubí López
Miguel is a Spanish illustrator whose optimistic and lively drawings will make joy course through your veins. His ‘stickers’ make our everyday Messenger conversations more jolly and another thing worth mentioning is his project with San Franciscan kids who drew their fantasies about the future under his guidance. The latter resulted in a video that Miguel accompanied with uplifting animations.
THE WORKSHOP requires bringing your own notebook with the Photoshop and PhotoBooth already installed.
With Miguel, you’ll try to animate yourself with the help of the PhotoBooth and Photoshop programmes. You’ll be leaving the workshop not only with fresh knowledge but also your own GIF, of which you’ll be the main protagonist.
The workshop is in English without an on-site translator.

15:00 - 17:00 WORKSHOP - An Excursion into an Illustrator’s Mind / Filip Pošivač
The workshop by Filip Pošivač will be split into two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part will address the topic of illustration vs. text process. What’s important to leave noticeable? To what extent should the artist be descriptive so he or she won’t rob the audience of imagination? How to communicate with the author of the text and the publisher? In the practical part you’ll try to compose a drawing corresponding to a text, all under Filip’s guidance.
Filip Pošivač is a Czech director, animated film artist, and illustrator. This year, his name was put on the honorary IBBY roll (International Board on Book for Young People) thanks to his unique book called Kuba Tuba Tatubahn. His successful puppet fairytale Až po uši v mechu (Up to Ears in Moss) is popular with both kids and their parents and still available at Stream.cz. Filip graduated from Film and Television Graphic at Prague’s UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design).

Juliána Chomová is a Prague’s UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design) graduate, illustrator, an author of multiple original books and magazines and will be in charge of a linocut print technique course. The printing will be done with an unconventional press brought from Holland, called ‘satinírka’. Each participant will take home several prints. The three-hour intensive course will take you from sketching to the final graphic.

A Tel-Aviv based illustrator, animator and (mostly) vegan. Creates freestyle improvised worlds, tip-toeing between the figurative and the abstract. Ori has been drawing from the womb to adulthood and graduated from college in 2010. Since, he has worked with various clients (such as Adobe, Apple, Nike and the NY Times) and gave talks at festivals such as Pictoplasma and Pecha Kucha.
The Embassy of the State of Israel in the Czech Republic financially supported the journey of Ori Toor to Prague.
At the masterclass Ori will show his illustration technique and philosophy and demonstrate how he works and let people ask him questions.

Tomáš Kučerovský belongs among the most distinctive authors of the Czech comic book scene. His graphic novels connect his architect experience with a peculiar, dreamy poetic. Besides having unique artistic traits, Tomáš is also a skilled storyteller. With the workshop participants he will share his experience with visual narration and offer them a short exercise. The workshop is suitable for animators, comic book authors, and anyone who wishes to improve their visual narration proficiency.

Scratchboard is an artistic technique where black surface is scratched out to reveal white lines underneath. The comic book author Tomáš Kučerovský is able to use it for visual narration and graphic novels and also for individual illustrations. The workshop will give you a chance to get familiar with the work of this distinctive artist and also to learn how to prepare a homemade scratchboard, using DYI principles.

Ori – an Israeli illustrator, a master of GIFs, an obsessive drawer of piles of noodle-y shapes, a vegetarian, and a dog lover. He was introduced to illustration by his mum who used to work as a carpet designer. He graduated from art school in 2010. Since then, he’s worked with various clients (e. g. Adobe, Apple, Nike or NY Times).
The Embassy of the State of Israel in the Czech Republic financially supported the journey of Ori Toor to Prague.
Ori will lead a workshop for intermediate level animators and he will teach you:
– how to prepare the Photoshop for animation
– how to create loops easily with the help of video layers
– how to animate with brushes
– shh! secret tips and tricks!
For the workshop you’ll need to bring your own notebook with the Photoshop CC installed (no older versions). The workshop is in English without an on-site translator.

Dana Lédl is known under the alias of Myokard. Her illustrations adorn book covers, magazines, newspapers, but also walls of many apartments. At LUSTR, she will lead a workshop focused on illustration but enriched with concentration and will exercises – both essential for the profession. Especially when you’re, let’s say, a mum, a student, an employee, and you still want to find the time to draw.
